I am Katharine LaBoda, and I founded Square One Tax Resolutions with a deep commitment to helping individuals and businesses navigate their tax problems and find manageable solutions. My journey began in 1994 when I started preparing tax returns. Over the next 13 years, I managed a large tax preparation franchise in the Albany, NY area. During this time, not only did I manage the multi-office tax franchise, but I also gained extensive knowledge in tax preparation. This permitted me to lead and teach others the art of tax preparation in group classroom settings.
After 13 years of franchise tax preparation management, I embarked on the next 11 years as a bankruptcy paralegal, while preparing tax returns under my own guise at the same time. It was in this role that I saw how tax debts could compound financial difficulties, especially in bankruptcy situations. This experience showed me the intricate link between taxes and bankruptcy.
In 2014, I had the opportunity to work with a retired Internal Revenue Officer who specialized in bankruptcy-related tax issues. Under his mentorship, I gained an in-depth understanding of how to resolve tax matters when they intersect with bankruptcy cases. This new knowledge reinvigorated me. I found immense satisfaction in solving these complex problems and seeing the emotional and financial relief it brought to my clients.
Today, my specialty as an Enrolled Agent permits me to work directly with my clients’ bankruptcy attorneys. I provide them with the precise information and documentation needed to develop the best legal strategy for handling their tax liabilities. This collaboration ensures that all tax issues are addressed holistically, giving clients the strongest chance for a successful financial recovery.
In addition to bankruptcy considerations as they pertain to tax liabilities, we also provide services for other resolution options, such as Offer in Compromise and Installment Agreements. We guide clients through complex IRS procedures, helping them understand their options and navigate the path to resolving their tax burdens.
My vision, and the reason I created Square One, is to meet people where they are—without judgment, but with compassion and respect. My team and I strive to provide hope and be the light at the end of the tunnel for those feeling overwhelmed by their tax issues.
Our name, Square One, reflects our mission: helping people get back to the start—a fresh, debt-free beginning. We know that every client’s situation is unique, and we’re committed to providing personalized solutions that work for them.
