What is an ITIN & why utilize a CAA?

What is an ITIN?

An ITIN is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS to individuals, regardless of immigration status, who are not eligible for a Social Security Number but still need to file a tax return or meet other tax-related obligations.

You might need an ITIN if you're:

  • A non-resident or resident alien with a requirement to file a U.S. tax return.
  • A dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien.
  • A non-resident alien claiming a tax treaty benefit.
  • A foreign national with a requirement to file a tax return.

What is Challenging About Doing It Yourself?

Getting an ITIN on your own can be challenging for a few reasons:

  • Lots of Paperwork: You must complete Form W-7 accurately and gather the proper documents to prove your identity and foreign status.
  • Making mistakes or leaving things out could result in your application being denied.
  • Contacting, reaching, and actually speaking with the IRS, with a representative specific to your application, can be challenging, to say the least.
  • Strict Rules: The IRS has specific requirements for the documents you must provide, and figuring out which documents to use can be confusing.

Why Use a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA)?

The Internal Revenue Service authorizes a Certified Acceptance Agent (CAA) to review and authenticate your documents.

  • Utilizing a CAA is essential because the CAA reviews and verifies the authenticity of all of your documents.
  • Once the CAA completes this step, the CAA takes the necessary copies of all the documents and mails the copies to the IRS.
  • You can keep all your identification documents, such as your passport, in your possession.
  • You do not need to send your original documents, such as your passport and birth certificates, to the IRS.
  • We’ll ensure your documents are accurate and up to date and handle the entire application process for you.
  • If there are any issues, we’ll contact the IRS. Our goal is to ensure your application is error-free and processed smoothly.
  • We’re always up to date with IRS rules and can give you personalized advice.
  • Plus, you won’t have to deal with the IRS directly - we’ll handle all communication on your behalf.
